Education and experience
This is Jackson’s second year studying in UVic. His major is economics. However, he personally does not like it very much, since he thinks it too difficult to understand some academic terms. He prefers to study political news in his spare time. He also joins a journalist club and sometimes he writes about current affairs in a local newspaper center.
Roles & Responsibilities
Jackson’s parents move to Vancouver and establish an overseas student counseling center. He has to study from Monday to Friday as a student. On the weekends, Jackson is responsible for initial understanding of clients’ basic requirements. After he gets the information from clients, he needs to analyze the data and fill in the form for professional counselors. However, due to the pandemic, the business of overseas counseling dramatically decreases. And Jackson’s work has been revised to online inquiries with clients. In his family, Jackson and his parents divide house chores equally. Mostly, he is in charge of taking care of the three pets and doing laundry.
Technical Skills
Jackson is skilled in computers and technology. He has been keen on using computers and smartphones to complete his homework. He likes to use grammar software to help correct his writing mistakes. Now, he can also use CANVA to create posters and videos for his art homework. Also, he is good at coding languages such as Java and sometimes he would use Scratch to make programming games. However, he is not familiar with data analysis and he hopes to learn more about it.
Subject Domain Skills & Knowledge
In terms of language, Jackson has a good command of English since he speaks English everyday and he writes English news. At school, he mostly speaks English with others. However, when he meets classmates on the road to class, he may feel embarrassed to greet others. In addition, he has a proficiency in Cantonese and Mandarin since he comes from Hongkong. When he is at home, he tends to speak both with his parents. When it comes to other knowledge, he likes to read comparative news published in China and in other countries. Knowing the differences, he can write more fair and rational articles about current affairs.
Motivation & Desires
Jackson wishes to be a journalist in Canada after finishing his undergraduate studies at UVic. He learns that to be a journalist, it is better for him to have a bachelor’s degree in journalism. At the same time, he tends to improve his written and verbal communication skills through learning in specific online courses. He also hopes he can afford his parents financially since he thinks it is his responsibility to take good care of them.
Goals & Expectations
Jackson’s current goal is to graduate with a reasonable academic score. Now he is in the second year but he is not good at economics. But he decides not to change the major and spend more time studying it and graduate successfully. He needs to join some related clubs or read more related videos to arouse his interests in learning economics.
Obstacles to Their Success
- Jackson is not passionate about his major at UVic and has a mediocre GPA, which can make it difficult for him to do the assignment.
- He is not social and prefers to stay alone. So he finds it difficult to do group assignment.
- He has few friends to talk to and most of the time he feels lonely.

Jackson is extremely hardworking, energetic, and motivated to succeed. He can spend time and energy to finish a task without complaining. He hopes to improve his family’s social status, since they are immigrants. Also, he hopes to do more for society in his own way. That’s why he pays so much attention to current affairs.
